Final de mi tesis doctoral

Muy buenas a tod@s!

Mil disculpas por haber estado tantos meses sin escribir ni una nueva entrada. Pero...he estado escribiendo mi tesis doctoral y no he tenido tiempo ni para respirar, SORRY! Al menos si que he mantenido al día el responder todas vuestras dudas, y muy agradecido de que seáis parte de este blog y os animo ha seguir escribiendo.

Ha sido un año caótico pero lleno de emociones! Acabé mi estancia de 3 meses en el JRC de la Comisión Europea como podéis leer en anteriores entradas del blog. La experiencia fue sublime, rodeado de naturaleza (lago Maggiore) y conociendo a tanta gente que me abrió su casa y me dejó ser parte de su núcleo desde el día uno. Italia siempre será parte de mi. 

Luego a mi vuelta, ya me puse full con la Tesis y después de sudor y lagrimas...aquí llegan las de alegría. Que es mi tesis impresa y lista para ser defendida. Mil gracias a todos los que han formado parte de esta tesis y me han ayudado, también quería agradecer al Politécnico de Madrid y al INIA.

De título: "Determination of emerging contaminants in environmental matrices" o " Determinación de contaminantes emergentes en matrices medio ambientales"


Mi tesis consta de seis artículos científicos, cinco de los cuales ya están publicados en revistas internacionales de prestigio. Por si alguno tiene interés incluyo link de descarga.

(está aun bajo revisión) crucemos los dedos para que sea publicado pronto.

Y poco más! Prometo noticias pronto, ya que tengo nuevos proyectos como una estancia post doctoral y la posible creación de una empresa...Y por supuesto retomar con la temática principal de este blog, que es presentaros nuevos productos agrícolas.

Funded PhD in Dublin


FUNDED PH.D. STUDENTSHIP

Emerging organic contaminants arising in rural environments: investigations in karst and fractured bedrock aquifers

The aim of this project is to investigate the occurrence of synthetic organic compounds arising from rural activities in Irish karst and fractured bedrock aquifers. The primary focus will be on the loss to groundwater of veterinary drugs used in Irish agriculture, particularly anti-parasitic drugs including anthelmintics, coccidiostats and pyrethroids, which represent the most widely use veterinary drugs in Irish agricultural production. The project will investigate the frequency of occurrence of different compounds and the relationship to their chemical characteristics. It will aim to determine both source factors (e.g. animal waste storage, landspreading, grazing and feeding locations) and pathway factors (e.g. characteristics of soil, Quaternary deposits and bedrock) involved in contaminant detections. This is a joint project between Trinity College Dublin and Teagasc through the Walsh Fellowship Scheme and it forms part of the Groundwater Spoke of the Irish Centre for Research in Applied Geosciences (iCRAG) (http://icrag-centre.org/). The iCRAG Centre is funded under the SFI Research Centres Programme and is co-funded under the European Regional Development Fund together with industry partners.

Requirements: Applicants should have a good primary degree (II1 or I) or M.Sc. in an appropriate discipline (Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Science, Agricultural Science, Earth Science, Hydrogeology etc.). Chemical analytical experience is essential and experience in chromatographic techniques and mass spectrometry would be highly advantageous. A full EU driving licence is required.

Starting date and funding: The project will start in September 2015. The funding is for a four year structured Ph.D. project, to be completed by end of August 2019. The project is open to EU students only (students who have been resident for 3 out of the last 5 years in the EU) and includes fees and a tax-free stipend of €18,000 per annum. Final appointment of the successful candidate is dependent on funding being finalised.

Becas FPI INIA 2014


Muy buenos días!!

Agrónomos y carreras afines estamos de enhorabuena!! Después de una convocatoria perdida...(la del 2013) por fin tenemos aquí la del 2014. Becas de pre-doctorado. Formación de Profesional Investigador, FPI-INIA.

Se ha publicado en el BOE  la Resolución de 7 de marzo de 2014, de la Presidencia del Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Tecnología Agraria y Alimentaria, por la que se aprueba la convocatoria de subvenciones para el año 2014, para la formación de personal investigador en agroalimentación en los centros de investigación agraria y alimentaria INIA-CCAA (FPI-INIA), en el marco del Subprograma Estatal de Formación del Programa Estatal de Promoción del Talento y su Empleabilidad del Plan Estatal de Investigación Científica y Técnica y de Innovación 2013-2016.

Trabajos para agronomos Marzo 2014


La Universidad de Copenague a empezado un proyecto de colaboración titulado ‘MIcrobial biofertilizers for enhanced Crop availability of Phosphorus pools in soil and waste – novel strategies for sustainable bio-based food production (MiCroP)’  Financiado  por The Danish Council for Strategic Research.


Los colaboradores en el proyecto "Center for Ecosystems and Environmental Sustainability at the Danish Technical University", tiene dos posiciones de  PhD asociadas a este proyecto. Fecha limite para aplicar 1 de  Marzo 2014.

Beca FPU suelo-árbol en Sevilla

Os presento una beca FPU que me ha llegado a través de la Sociedad de Ciencia de Suelo Española. Tiene muy buena pinta, y espero que sea del agrado de todos mis compañeros forestales que cursaron la carrera junto a mi. A todos ellos va dedicado! Ojalá se le den a alguno de ellos!!

Becas Formación del Profesorado Universitario (FPU)


Aunque sigo sin creérmelo, las becas FPU ya están aquí!! Llegan tras no salir ni una en el 2012, así que habrá mucha gente que las estaría esperando como agua de mayo.

Están becas a diferencia de las FPI (donde cuenta el currículum) cuenta sobre todo el expediente académico. Veréis que hay una tabla con notas mínimas para la aplicación dependiendo el campo de comprendido (ciencias, humanidades...).

Ponemos en su conocimiento que en el día de hoy ha sido publicada en el BOE, la Resolución de 18 de noviembre de 2013, de la Secretaría de Estado de Educación, Formación Profesional y Universidades, por la que se convocan las ayudas FPU (convocatoria 2013).

Premio Fertiberia, Mejor Tesis Doctoral Agronómica.

Premio Fertiberia, Mejor Tesis Doctoral Agronómica.
 
Esta es la Decimo sexta Edición, ya está abierta la convocatoria del 2012. Pero cuidadín que el plazo de presentación se cierra el 30 de Julio de 2013.
 
El premio a mejor tesis asciende a 24.000€ así que creo que merece mucho la pena intentarlo.
 
El requisito es que la tesis debe haber sido calificada con "cum laude" y la temática debe estar relacionada de una forma directa con la fertilización, los suelos y su enmienda, aunque también se valorarán aquellas relacionadas con la actividad agrícola en general.
 
Para entrar a concurso se debe enviar un ejemplar digital de la tesis junto con dos ejemplares de artículos publicados, el C.V y la calificación de la misma.

6 PhD para Agrónomos o disciplinas similares en UK

Buenas tardes a todos. Mientras mi cromatograma pincha la secuencia que le he ordenado y que muy obediente me va hacer, aprovecho para comentaros que han salido 6 tesis doctorales para Agrónomos y similares en UK para el 2013. El último día para presentar la solicitud es el 31 de Mayo. Así que aun queda un mes, tiempo de sobra para preparar una buena candidatura. FUTUREROOTS PhD studentships 2013


Project Overview

The European Research Council (ERC) and University of Nottingham are co-funding a total of 6 PhD studentships as part of the ERC FUTUREROOTS project awarded to a multidisciplinary team of researchers based at the Centre for Plant Integrative Biology (CPIB) led by Professor Malcolm Bennett. Scientific Background


Food security represents a pressing global issue. Crop production has to double by 2050 to keep pace with global population growth increasing to 9 billion. This target is even more challenging given the impact of climate change on water availability and the drive to reduce fertilizer inputs to make agriculture become more environmentally sustainable. In both cases, developing crops with improved water and nutrient uptake efficiency would provide the solution. Root architecture critically influences nutrient and water uptake efficiency. For example, rooting depth impacts the efficient acquisition of soil nitrogen (and water) since nitrate leaches deep into the soil. In contrast, phosphate use efficiency could be significantly improved without increasing root depth by manipulating the angle of root growth to better explore the topsoil where this macronutrient accumulates. Despite this knowledge, the genes that regulate root traits such as angle, depth and density in crops remain to be identified.
Our multidisciplinary team recently received over £6M from the European Research Council (ERC), Wolfson Foundation and University of Nottingham to create a unique X-ray based root-imaging facility to select new varieties of wheat with improved nutrient and water uptake efficiency. This cutting edge facility will accommodate ERC funded postdoctoral researchers and PhD students, X-ray imaging research equipment and automated growth facilities in one state-of-the-art building and fully automated greenhouse complex. Trabajo para Agrónomos y similares en ICRAF (destino: el Mundo)

Buenas tardes, os presento una gran oportunidad de conocer mundo gracias a Climate Change Scientist at the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF). La organización está en Kenia pero el trabajo consistirá en representarlos por todo el mundo. Con muy buen sueldo (según ellos).

Specific Responsibilities
  • Develop and improve modelling tools and methods related to climate and other spatially explicit data to improve decision making at community to international scales.
  • Support the Climate Change Unit in improving its ability to answer research questions related to the connection between climate variability and change and agroforestry and other climate-smart agricultural systems.
  • Collaborate with the Geoinformatics Unit, the Research Methods Group and Knowledge Management in connecting climate and potentially other climate-relevant data to other geospatially explicit information.
  • Coordinate climate change modelling with ICRAF regions and build capacity within ICRAF and its partners where appropriate.
  • Represent ICRAF at national and international fora.
  • Lead and contribute to the publication of original research papers and syntheses of work carried out within ICRAF and with partners.
  • Raise funds related to the Climate Change Unit.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned by the supervisor where pertinent to successfully carrying out the job.
Qualifications and experience
  • At least a PhD in atmospheric science, physical geography, plant ecology, agronomics or other relevant field of science. A post-doc relevant to the field is highly advantageous.
  • Excellent demonstrated programming and modelling skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle large datasets.
  • Relevant publications in peer-reviewed journals at least in the pipeline.
  • Excellent command of English demonstrated by good presenting and communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to work under pressure.
  • Good networking skills and capacity to work in multicultural teams.
  • Experience with agroforestry systems and a good understanding of social-ecological systems are an advantage.
  • Work experience in a developing country is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of the R programming language is an advantage.

PhD position offer at Swansea University (UK)


Project and Aims
Soils represent the largest store of the world’s terrestrial carbon (C). They can become a net source of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4), if C mineralization exceeds its accumulation in soil organic matter (SOM) and hence increase total greenhouse gas emissions. Soils are commonly regarded as able to absorb water readily, however, most soils develop some degree of soil water repellency (SWR) after dry spells which can persist for weeks or months. As SWR controls soil moisture it affects microbial respiration and consequently has significant effect on CO2 and CH4 fluxes.
The aim of the study is to determine how CH4 fluxes are affected by soil water repellency, with the specific objectives including the quantification of the CH4 fluxes and determination of the microbial methanogenic and methanotrophic activities in wettable and water-repellent soils.
The work will include in situ monitoring of study sites located nationally and internationally, measurements of gas fluxes under controlled laboratory conditions, quantitative analyses of gases using the Li-Cor gas analyser and GC-MS techniques, determination of microbial community dynamics and functional activity using metagenomic and metatranscriptomic methods.

This work will be conducted in parallel to the on-going research activities of Dr Emilia Urbanek within the Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship from the Royal Society which will lead to a comprehensive investigation of carbon fluxes in water repellent soils by examining CO2 and CH4 components.

Applicant requirements
We are seeking enthusiastic, highly motivated applicants with good team working skills, good analytical knowledge and with a good first degree (1st or upper 2nd class) in microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry or other related scientific discipline with a keen interest in environmental sciences. Experience with field work is not essential, though desirable.

The Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences announces an opening for a post doctoral fellowship, funded partly under an EU FP7 Marie-Curie Initial Training Network (ITN), entitled ‘Recovery and Use of Nutrients, Energy and Organic Matter from Animal Waste’ (ReUseWaste, www.reusewaste.eu) and partly by the research project ‘Danish Nitrogen Mitigation Assessment: Research and Knowhow for a Sustainable, Low-Nitrogen Food Production’ (DNMARK, www.dnmark.dk), funded by the Danish Council for Strategic Research.

Project background

The DNMARK project originates from the European Nitrogen Assessment, which identified improved recycling of nitrogen (and phosphorus) from waste water systems as one of the seven major actions to be taken to radically alter the N flows of society. Developments in urban waste management systems will produce new types of waste residuals that contain valuable nutrients. However, there is a knowledge gap in regards to the appropriate and safe use of such products as well as the efficiency of their utilization in agricultural systems.

In a similar vein, the ReUseWaste project focuses on the increased production of organic wastes in animal production systems in Europe. Recycling of nutrients, organic matter and recovery of energy from animal manures is also recognised as an area where significant improvements are needed. The objective of the project is to develop new tools and technologies for animal manure management systems. Similar to waste residuals from urban waste streams, new treatment technologies of animal waste produce different types of residues, and the acceptability and efficiency of such residues in agriculture is not yet extensively tested.

Job description and research tasks

The post doctoral position will focus on these two waste stream types with a common focus on nitrogen recycling to agricultural systems. The research will thus include:
* Screening the market for urban and agricultural organic waste-derived residuals with a current or potential use as commercial biofertilizers
* Selection of residual types for further characterization (lab. analyses, incubations, pot-trials) and field evaluation (in long-term field experiments)
* Investigation of the feasibility and stakeholder acceptability of alternate biofertilizer solutions. Some of the work will be based on collaboration with industry and agricultural organisations and companies already operating in the field, as well as other important stakeholders like environmental agencies, authorities and NGOs.
Your key tasks as a Post doc fellow are to:

* Manage and carry out your research project
* Write scientific articles on your research activity
* Participate in ReUseWaste and DNMARK network meetings and other activities
* Make short research stay/secondment at one of the partner institutions or industry 
* Present results of your research activity at international congresses
* Contribute to dissemination of your research to the wider publicThe successful candidates will participate in a Marie Curie international training network and will work in a highly interactive international environment with other Marie-Curie PhD students/post docs/research assistants, researchers and industry. 
Qualification requirements

We are seeking a candidate preferably with a background in agronomy, soil or environmental science, natural resource management or a related field. The candidate should have a strong interest in waste  recycling, soil fertility and turnover processes and should be willing and have lab skills to learn and apply  analytical and experimental techniques for nutrient and organic matter process studies. Experience with  relevant methods in this field will be an advantage. Furthermore, experience with qualitative research  methods (questionnaire surveys, stakeholder interviews etc.) will be an advantage. Key criteria for the assessment of candidates:
* Documented scientific qualifications, such as a Ph.D. or equivalent in relation to the above subject  area(s), with a good publication record
* Relevant work and research experience relevant to the post doc programme
* Other professional activities
* Motivation and quality of the proposal for research activities
* Fluency in English 
* Well-developed collaborative skills
